Question Storming

Question storming is a valuable technique for generating a large number of questions on a given topic or problem, and can help you identify new insights and opportunities for further exploration.

Steps to do Question Storming:

  • Define the problem: Describe the problematic situation and your goal for the change. Share assumptions about the situation and look at the actual facts about the situation.
  • Set a time limit: Set a time limit for the question storming session. This will help keep the session focused and ensure that you generate as many questions as possible in the allotted time.
  • Generate questions: Write down as many questions as possible related to the topic or problem. Encourage participants to think creatively and not to judge the quality of the questions at this stage.
    • Example Questions:
      • What do I want to change about the team?
      • What don’t we want to change?
      • What would I like to see happen that isn’t happening now?
      • How can we all listen better?
      • What can I do to be more creative?
      • How can I keep the communication channels open between me, you and the team?
      • What will help me to keep asking the right kind of questions?
      • How do we state our goals better so everybody can be aligned?
      • How do I keep from being judgemental?
      • What are the greatest strengths of each team member?
      • How do we make sure that we follow through on all our promises?
      • How can I assure each team member it’s ok to ask for help?
      • What will help each of us make our best contribution?
  • Categorize the questions: Once you have generated a large number of questions, group them into categories based on their topic or theme. This will help you identify common themes and areas of focus.
  • Prioritize the questions: Review the questions and prioritize them based on their importance and relevance to the topic or problem. This will help you focus your efforts on the most important and relevant questions.
  • Take action: Use the questions to guide your decision-making, problem-solving, or further exploration of the topic. The questions can also be used to guide research or other activities related to the topic or problem.

Notice the power questions have to reveal different avenues that were not visible earlier.
