These are my take away points from the book – Make Time By Jake Knapp and John Zeratsky – Part 2
Ask yourself a question daily: What do I want to be the highlight of my day?
Make time for the things that matter, that give you joy and savour the moments instead of rushing through them and trying to make the most of each minute you have.
Stop living “someday” life, where you will only be proud and happy, some day when you will achieve your long term goal. Don’t lose your months by being busy, taking care of your to do list that you don’t even remember any moment that you cherished, when you look back at the end of the month. Slow down and make sure everyday has a highlight.
Instead of, tug a war between distractions and busy work, be intentional and focus about how you spend your time.
Here are the ways how to pick the highlights of the day:
1- Urgency:
What is the most pressing thing I have to do today?
Focus on need.
2- Satisfaction:
At the end of the day which Highlight will bring the most satisfaction?
Focus on want and sense of accomplishment.
3- Joy:
When I reflect on today, why will it bring me the most joy?
Focus on happiness and being less reactive. Meeting a friend or reading a book. You only waste time if you are not intentional about how you spend it.
Making times for highlight:
1- Schedule your highlight and put it on the calendar.
2- Block your calendar for your daily highlight
3- If there is no time in calendar make time, by bulldozing your calendar
4- Just say no to make time for your highlight, and do not let other less important work make you miss working on your highlight.
5- Design your calendar hour by hour and be ok to make changes during the day if needed.
6- Quit when the day is done but work is not, give yourself permission to quit and pick it up the next day.
