We wish for many things; we work for a career for a long time; we plan for a vacation for many days but when we get there, we are usually not very satisfied. There is some element of imperfection that still remains. Although when someone asks, Are you happy now to land this job or to open this business? even if we say yes, most of the time something pinches us, making us feel something is missing.
It’s a fact that preparing for a vacation and planning for it is more fun than being on vacation. The reason is that we are too vague in thinking about what we really want. In order to steer our lives to satisfying destinations and be able to make exact plans, we need to remove vagueness from our thoughts and be more specific about our feelings. When we have clarity, we will be content after reaching our destination.
The mind tends to throw thoughts that are general, so we need to make extra effort to get more specific answers and breakdown our vagueness by asking more questions like:
- What is it about creativity that I enjoy?
- During what moments of my current working life do I not feel satisfied?
- When I say fun, what do I really mean?
- What are some fun experiences I might have had recently?
- What is the opposite of not having fun?
- What does beauty mean to me? Is beauty fairness of skin, smooth pimple-less skin, brown eyes, or a slim body?
We are at risk of aiming at the wrong target if we do not have clarity about what we want. Lack of clarity sometimes feels like a very academic worry, but it is the root of dissatisfaction, failed efforts, and doomed goals.
Give yourself the best chance of reaching what you actually seek by working against inertia of mind and digging deeper in your thoughts to know exactly what you mean by simple words like fun, beauty, and creativity.
