Being Comfortable in Uncomfortable Zone

Learning something new, can be very uncomfortable experience, but in this fast pace life, learning is integral to stay relevant. We need growth mindset to continue learning and train our brain to be comfortable in the uncomfortable zone. Changing the way we self talk, when faced with the challenge of learning something new, can help tremendously.

For example:

  • Change the instant response to an unknown thing “I am ok without learning this.” to “What would my future look like if I did?”
  • Changing the automatic resistance to not accept that you need to learn something “I am already fine at this” to “ Am I really? How do I compare with my peers?” Double check the talk you are doing with yourself.
  • Change “It is not interesting or useful ” to “I wonder why others find it interesting or useful” to view things at different perspective.
  • When trying out something new, we do stumble sometimes. Change the inner narrative from “I am really bad at this” to “ I am making beginners mistake and I will get better”.

Shifting our focus from challenges to benefits, is a powerful way to increase our aspiration to do a challenging task. Allowing ourselves to be vulnerable enough, to accept that we can fail in the beginning is step, to move towards agility and makes it easier to be and stay in uncomfortable zone for longer period of time, which is need of this rapidly changing world.
