Language changes the focus of the thinking and purpose behind our actions. Changing our words can change our world. The words we use impact our thinking, which impacts our feelings, which in turn affects the way we act.

Effective communication requires ongoing self-awareness and the process of self-reprogramming. Our choice of words serves as a mirror, reflecting our character. This is precisely why we discourage our children from using inappropriate language. If we understand the power of words, we can gain lots of control over our thinking and feelings.

The first step to better communication is to pause and not react; instead, give yourself the opportunity to rephrase your response in a more effective way.

If we replace the reactive language of convincing, complying, confirming, and requesting permission with a proactive language of intent and commitment to action, we will be more proactive and will feel empowered. The feeling of empowerment adds fuel to the passion with which anything can be done.

If we replace the language of performing and proving with the language of learning and improving, our mindset changes from doing things to get others appreciation or approval and from remaining inside the box to a growth mindset: going outside the box, trying new things, being okay with failure, and learning from each experience.

If we replace the language of certainty with the language of curiosity, we become more daring and leave the pressure of knowing everything behind us.
